University of Ioannina in Greece has made a thesis on their Big Hanna Composter

'The University of Ioannina (North-Western Greece), the 4th biggest Greek University with more than 12000 under- and graduate students has recently installed an aerobic treatment system (Big Hanna continuous flow composter, with weekly process-ing capacity of 400-1200 kg of wastes, from the company Susteco AB, Sweden) in order to covert the food residues from the student restaurant, the student residences and the canteens (approximately 120 kg/day) within the University campus in a first class compost. The compost produced is used for the restoration of areas within the campus and in gardens of the University personnel. The aim of the diploma thesis was to monitor the composter’s operation through calculation of the carbon balance, based on measurements of different environ-mental parameters during a period of 4 months'

Wording from the abstract of the thesis - we are especially happy with the conclusion made:

'The excellent operation of the system is also demonstrated by the fact that no lechates were formed neither methane that could be an indicator of anaerobic conditions. In addition during the operation the 41.97% of the incoming carbon is converted into compost and 49.10% is converted to CO2.'

A picture is worth more than a thousand words... So we wanted to share these pictures with you from a recent visit at One Brighton in UK. First picture shows a roof-top allotment where compost from Big Hanna Composter has been added to one half - guess which one?

Yes, it's the left side where the salad is growing!

On the the terrace where the allotments are, there is a bucket with compost which the residents can to use and it says: "A gift from Big Hanna".

We are pleased toannounce that on 23 September 2011, our Big Hanna model T40 was installed atthe prestigious Heritage Awali Resort (www.heritageawali.mu) in the Bel Ombre region of southern Mauritius. Two more schools in Devon are now composting on site with Big Hanna Composter

During this summer another two schools in Devon got their Big Hanna Composters installed, Ladysmith Infants School and Whipton Barton Junior School.

At Ladysmith Infants school there are 350children, but they also cook for 100 nursery children and 340 pupils atthe Ladysmith Junior school which is why the amount of compostable wasteis significantly higher than expected for a school of this size. They now have a model T75 installed to compost approximately 260 kgs food waste per week. Ladysmith Infant School and Nursery is awarded silver in the 'Food for Life Partnership' for its healthy food so we expect the compost to be of excellent quality!

At Ladysmith Infant school they have flowerbeds where they are growing flowers and vegetables and strawberries. At a visit to Ladysmith by Susteco's Cecilia Ek on the 12th of October noticed that the strawberries were ready to be picked and eaten! This is the second harvest for Ladysmith this year. It is very unusual and due to the nice warm weather in Devon this autumn.

At Whipton Barton Junior School there are 250children but they also cook for Whipton Barton Infants, The Topsham Schooland Montgomery Primary school, which explains why they also produce more than theexpected amount of food waste for a school of this size.

The operator of the Big Hanna, Kevin Waite, kept feeding grass cuttings and soft leaves into the composter during the summer break to start up the biological process. Now when the term has started again all food waste is put into the Big Hanna. Picture below shows Big Hanna Composter in a cage!

Minister visits Environmental Trust Fund project at Nepisiguit Chaleur Solid Waste Commission

Environment Minister Margaret-Ann Blaney visited the Nepisiguit Chaleur Solid Waste Commission to learn more about projects that received $55,000 under the Environmental Trust Fund. Blaney also visited a compost system, named Big Hanna installed at École Secondaire Népisiguit, which is part of a project previously funded in part by the Envrionmental Trust Fund. "I was pleased to see this compost system in action," said Blaney. "Project such as this are great examples of the excellent work being done by environmental groups and orgnaizations supported every year by the Environmental Trust Fund.

Big Hanna The Story - Our Composting Journey by Glenmore Lodge

We installed a Big Hanna T120 at Glenmore Lodge, Scotland in January this year and they now published their very own story about their 'Composting Journey':

Here at Glenmore Lodge we have one of the best back garden's in the world and we want to continue enjoying it for years to come. Glenmore Lodge is Scotland’s National Outdoor Training Centre; our aim is to offer world class training in outdoor adventure sports and encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors more often. "We understand the fragile and special nature of our environment and we will ensure that activities are sustainable. We are committed to making environmental improvements to the site on which we operate and we will take a responsible approach to the efficient use of our resources and waste management. We will communicate high standards of sustainable good practice to our customers and students attending courses. We acknowledge our global and local social responsibilities, especially in the local area as an employer and purchaser of local goods and user of local services".

Big Hanna arrived on the back of a lorry in November 2010 to be commissioned a few weeks later, unfortunately this coincided with a huge dump of snow so the commissioning was postponed until mid January. If you haven’t worked it out already Big Hanna is a composter designed for decomposing organic waste. There are several different models but we have the T120 capable of taking up to 500kg of waste per week. Made of stainless steel she is expected to last at least 20 years. The process is simple the kitchen staff separate the waste from the kitchen and dining room and put all non meat food waste into green caddy buckets, these are taken daily and weighed then emptied into the machine. A record is kept of the amount going in and also the amount of woodchip pellets to absorb moisture. There a few quick checks to be made daily to make sure the fan is working, cleaning of the filter, checking the bag collecting the compost is secure, and emptying if equired, checking of the temperatures on the control panel and checking the moisture content. On a less regular basis the heating panel needs cleaned if it is in use and the drainage filter emptied. Both relatively simple procedures. This whole process only takes around 10 minutes a day. We are still in the start up phase which takes around 8 weeks and have so far had no problems with the operation of the machine. There is very little smell as the bio filter takes care of that. This filter is a unit full of wood chip and enzymes with an outlet pipe which exits the building. Best of all our food waste to landfill has reduced. Thanks Hanna.

Installation at Arholma North Lodge Archipelago

In early August, we installed a Big Hanna composter model T40 at Arholma North Lodge Archipelago in the northern Stockholm archipelago. Arholma North is a hostel on the island Arholma's northern tip with a breathtaking nature. If you are in the Stockholm area in the summer time it is definetely worth a visit. This area is known to be one of the most beatiful around Stockholm.
We asked them to write in their own words why they choose to start composting with Big Hanna:

"We wanted to do something to reduce our variable waste charges which had started to get very expensive. At the same time, we wanted to find another way to take care of our food waste because it seemed like a big waste and environmentally insane to transport several bags of food waste from the island every week, while we transported bags of soil each spring for our cultivations and flowerbeds. We have several times looked for a compost solution for our food waste but not found a sensible solution, but this spring we found Big Hanna's website on the internet and after some thought, we bought a Composter that fit our needs. It is now in operation and we are very pleased, not only with its operation but also the contact, response and installation from Susteco AB."Arholma North Lodge Archipelago - in the northern Stockholm archipelago

This hostel is located on a previously top secret coastal defense facility in the outer archipelago. Strategically located by the sea on Arholma's northern tip, is Battery Arholma. Battery Arholma was built for the Cold War (it was completed in 1968) and is a major coastal defense system with a 10.5 cm heavy coastal artillery gun located at Arholma's northern tip. The cannon overlooks the Åland Sea and the rock below hides a major facility with barracks, command center, kitchen, medical facilities etc. The plant was secret and would protect Sweden from a hostile invasion. Mater-Bi® biodegradable and compostable bags fully decomposes in Big Hanna Composter

We are happy to announce that the Mater-Bi® biodegradable and compostable bags, certified “OK Compost HOME”, fully decompose in our Big Hanna composter. A full scale, 2 month long test has been carried out at One Brighton. One Brighton is, as you may know, a housing area with 172 flats in Brighton, UK, where both families and students live in one and two bedroom apartments and studio apartments near to the main train station.

The One Brighton residents collect all their kitchen waste in compostable bags, drop the bags down a waste shute which leads into a collection bin. The collection bin is next to the Big Hanna composter and 5 days a week the’ green caretaker’ loads the compostable bags containing the food waste into the composter. During the test period some 150-200 unopened Mater-Bi® bags containing kitchen waste have been loaded into the Big Hanna’s hopper inlet. Within the first quarter of Big Hanna’s cylinder small parts of Mater-Bi® are visible but there is no sign of the bags either in the rest of the cylinder or in the finished compost.

These Mater-Bi® biodegradable and compostable bags are certified according to “OK Compost HOME” so if you want to use biodegradable bags we recommend that they meet this standard. We are particularly happy with the performance of the Mater-Bi® bags and the Big Hanna in composting them so effectively. This trial has demonstrated that the action of the Big Hanna ‘in feed’ will open up the bags (which is important for the composting process) and shown that a shredder is not needed. Shredders are very effective in many sites but in housing, because a lot of non food waste items get into the food waste stream, they often block or break-down and should be avoided.

Big Hanna Composter composts at Ryds Brunn School in Sweden

'Ryds Brunn' is a state run institutional school for boys aged 13 to 18 years old who suffer from psycho/social issues. There are 20 residential students and the school plays a key role in their treatment and development. The school enjoys a beautiful location in the south of Sweden having once been a health resort. In the early 1900’s health resorts were very popular however many only survived a few years but Ryds Brunn Health Resort was open to guests for 53 years between 1892 to 1944.

The school has a very green waste policy and with the addition of the Big Hanna Composter all waste is now taken care of. The compost will be used on the school’s grounds.

Big Hanna Composter installed in New Brunswick, Canada

This machine made the press even before it arrived in Canada so we hope that there will be more articles like this now that it has actually arrived! The article had to use the computer graphic and now when the installation is completed this week you can see that the graphic is very accurate. The image was made in Google SketchUp.

The picture from the site shows the T120 with a biofilter. This machine is placed at Népisiguit high school in New Brunswick. The composter will be used as an educational tool to showcase how we can sustainably remedy to landfilling organics.

The biofilter is positioned just in front of the machine and has become very popular. The biofilter is very effeciently treating any odours coming from the biological process and is small, compact and easy to maintain.

Big Hanna Composter - again north of the Arctic Circle

Swedish Space Corporation has once more installed a Big Hanna Composter at their facility in Esrange, Kiruna. Swedish Space Corporation operations at Esrange have grown since they installed their Big Hanna Composter model T120 in 2005 so they decided to buy one more model T120, this time with a hopper fed inlet and shredder. The machine was installed in February this year. Both machines are installed in an insulated 'composthouse' at Esrange.

Swedish Space Corporation develops and build satellites, launches research rockets and weather and more. Since their start in 1966 more than 500 rockets and 550 high altitudes balloons has been launched from Esrange.

The 28th of January our distributor Noele creative solutions Ltd, Tina Bukovnik and Natalija Krizmanic, invited to a presentation of Big Hanna Composter. The presentation was at the Hotel Triglav, located in the beautiful city of Bled, where the first Big Hanna installation in the country is. This hotel is renowned for its traditional food and first grade ingredients that are supplied by local suppliers.

Susteco's Export Manager Cecilia Ek, held an introduction of how composting with Big Hanna works and how easy it is to compost on-site. After the introduction people were invited to visit the machine and see the composting taking place indoors where the installation is made. People participating were very impressed by the simplicity of the machine and that it is possible to compost on-site with food waste from a restaurant kitchen.

A Big Hanna T120 has recently been installed at the renouned Scottish National Outdoor Centre at Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorm Mountains as part of a food waste composting initiative by the Community Recycling Network Scotland . This particular machine is the first in this size in the UK to be able to utilise single phase power instead of the normal three phase. Glenmore Lodge provides a wide variety activities including skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking and survival courses. Glenmore Lodge is highly well equipped with very comfortable accomodation and hearty meals for the hungry mountain sport enthusiast. The Big Hanna will take all the sites food waste and turn it into an excellent compost that can be used around the site. Ecotec'c founder, Mehmet Basaran, have an architect and construction company since 20 years. Ivybridge Community College's Composting Open Day

It was a wild, wet and windy day when Devon County Council and Ivybridge Community Council held an open day to celebrate the schools composting project. Ivybridge are using a Big Hanna T75, provided by Devon County Council, to compost their kitchen waste and use the resultant compost, after maturation, in the school's polytunnel. Ivybridge are part of a schools composting programme put in place in over 40 primary and secondary schools across the county by Devon County Council. As well as Ivybridge, Okehampton College have a Big Hanna T60 whilst other schools are using a combination of the Ridan Composter and Nicky Scott's 'Hot Box' composter.

Big Hanna Composter can now be seen (again) on You Tube and on Imperial College's website where the "CompPod building" housing IMC's macerating and dewatering equipment (the Waste Pro) together with Big Hanna Composter is installed. Together they process 1.1 tonnes of food waste each week - some 80% is reduced through the macerating/dewatering. Then the Big Hanna composting unit convert the macerated and dewatered food waste into a rich organic compost.

McGILL UNIVERSITY COMPOSTING SITE - PRESENTATION OF BIG HANNA COMPOSTER MODEL T240

On June 29, 2010 at McGill University's

composting site, was held a special presentation of the Big Hanna composter model T240 used for food waste composting on downtown Montreal campus. Vertal inc., North American distributor of Big Hanna composters, received upon invitation representatives of environmental organizations to demonstrate the operation of the composting site at McGill University.

The demonstration of the composter's daily operations is explained in detail including introduction of food waste in the composter. Guests were able to see the simplicity of operations management, observe and touch the composting biological process in both the heart and at the exit of the composter. Also, the computer controlling the composting process allowed a clear interpretation of the control parameter's adjustment based on data collected in the composter.

The McGill University composting site, located in the heart of campus in downtown Montreal, requires a comprehensive and effective management of odors. The biofilter connected to the composter allows total control of air emissions on campus.

Seen here, Mr Claude Beaulé, Vice-President of Vertal inc. is explaining the composting process operations to the guests. Major comments following the presentation expressed that it is possible to have a clean and odorless composting site in a densely populated urban environment and the space required for effective management of food waste is modest considering the massive amount of organic material processed, in this case between 60 and 100 tons annually.

Thanks to everyone, of all ages, who visited the Susteco stand at the Eco Schools Exhibition in Peterborough on the 23rd of June. It was great to see the high level and understanding of environmental issues amongst many of the children we spoke to. We definitely had the impression that many schools want to do more about their food waste and they were glad to see that Big Hanna's technology was available as a solution. Apart from the practical aspects of recycling food waste Big Hanna could be a very useful educational tool, teaching children about microbiology, horticulture, climate change and waste. We hope to see many more Big Hanna's in UK schools before too long!

Big Hanna comes to Devon schools

Schools provide the perfect location for a Big Hanna. There are so many positive aspects to composting food waste at a school - as well as the usual benefits of on site composting there are clear sociological and educational dimensions, students can learn about the science of composting as well as the environmental benefits. In recognition of this Devon County Council have invested in two Big Hanna's - a T60 installed at Okehampton College in June '09 and a T75 for Ivybridge Community College installed in May '10 as part of a county wide initiative to bring food waste composting to primary and secondary schools in Devon using a variety of types and sizes of technologies. Okehampton College already enjoyed an excellent volunteer scheme called 'Growing Our Futures' that provides students with practical experience of vegetable growing as well as the colleges kitchens with a ready supply of tasty and fresh produce and the Big Hanna has added an extra dimension, allowing the food waste to be composted and the compost to provide a growing media for the vegetable garden. Ivybridge hope to start their Big Hanna just after half term and will also use the compost for growing vegetables after maturation. You can see from the attached picture that the Ivybridge caretaking staff are taking training very seriously - and then there is always the manual in case they miss anything!

First Mobile Big Hanna Composter - Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Rangers, Ontario Canada

The first Big Hanna mobile composting unit was installed in Thunder Bay Ontario for the Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Rangers. The composter is mounted on a trailer that follows to fire ranger's forest camps.

The Big Hanna composter is receiving all the food waste of the fire ranger's camp and allows composting locally the food waste instead of hauling the garbage back to landfill. It's a wonderful accomplishment in the green waste treatment plan established by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ontario Canada.

Remarkable efforts of coordination were done by both the Ministry of Natural Resource's representatives, by Vertal inc. and by Susteco AB to get the mobile Big Hanna on Wheels. Officials of the Société des Alcools du Quebec proudly pose in front of the Big Hanna composter model T60 recently installed at the Quebec SAQ distribution center.

After impressive efforts to achieve this Big Hanna composter project, all employees of the SAQ in Quebec can now insert all of their food waste in the composter.

Representatives of the Vertal inc. company spared no efforts to get all necessary permits and authorizations for all food waste composting of including even meat, fish and dairy solids. The composting facility was awarded by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks of Québec a complete certificate of authorization allowing the composting of all the cafeteria's food waste of the Quebec SAQ distribution center.

Congratulations to all participants in this project that have clearly demonstrated that it is possible to take concrete action in reducing the environmental impacts of our daily activities.

Local composting is profitable for all.

Greenhouse kick-off in Sunhouses

Beautiful weather and happy faces when Sunhouses had their spring kick-off for the greenhouses on Saturday 24:th of July 2010. Gårdstensbostäder (public housing company in Gothenburg) invited their tennants to picnic and other activities. Evelina Davidsson, contact person for the three areas where the composters are installed, offered Susteco - Big Hanna a great opportunity to reunite with the tennants and talk composting. These machines have now been installed for 10 years since the big re-build of this area was done. Gårdstensbostäder won the World Habitat Award in 2005: "A range of innovative environmentally and socially sustainable approaches were used in the renovation of this former problem housing estate in Goteborg, which is now one of the most popular in the city. Community involvement throughout the design process and in the on-going management and maintenance of the estate helps to ensure a successful integration of Swedish and immigrant families, as does the provision of community facilities, in particular the communal greenhouses." The greenhouse kick-off is a good example that Gårdstensbostäder are continuing to work with community involvement!
